Welcoming our new Charity Director Nicola!

Sharing her thoughts about her new role...

We are incredibly excited to welcome our new Charity Director, Nicola Nuttall, to the team. A charity sector professional specialising in governance, partnerships, fundraising and engagement, Nicola will be bringing a wealth of knowledge to help shape our next steps and is currently learning the ropes alongside Claire. Here are her words:

Cornwall Climate Care is a vibrant and values led organisation that works hard to find the positives in what can seem like gloomy times. Cornwall is unique - a place of contrasts and challenges where people flock to enjoy its outstanding natural beauty and, in doing, so contribute to the destabilisation of the fragile ecosystem. At the same time, those living and working in Cornwall are finding ways to counter some of those locally created environmental challenges, as well as responding to the wider global issues affecting the county.

These stories of 'what can we do' rather than 'what can't we do' underpin the strategy and work of Cornwall Climate Care - and that positivity attracted me to work with this dynamic organisation, as did the extensive educational programming running across the county.

I'm absolutely delighted to join a group of such dedicated people who have worked tirelessly to find the positives amidst what can be a storm of negativity around the climate crisis. I've worked in the charity and third sectors for the whole of my career, latterly focusing on how to run charities well, positively and proactively.

I married a Cornish environmentalist in 1993 and have lived in North and East Cornwall for over 20 years. After a short sojourn in Somerset I'm delighted to be moving back to the county in the next few weeks. There I will be focusing on my two Cornish directorships with Cornwall Climate Care and the Charles Causley Trust and my second year of PhD study at the University of Falmouth.

In life, we often fall into roles and careers that are unexpected and unplanned and from early beginnings as an archaeologist specialising in community engagement, a teacher and visitor services manager my pathway quickly moved into campaigning, socially impactful programming, fundraising and good governance.

I've worked in British and American universities supporting research impact; written strategies for the National Trust and multiple charities, and managed international partnerships across social sciences and culture. In 1997 I set up my own consultancy, Tempus Fugit, with the intention of engaging more people with the things that make them happy, more confident and better skilled.

In the last 15 years I have become a mentor and trainer to students and young people starting out on their career journeys, as well as training, supporting and advising senior managers and organisations as they navigate personal and environmental challenges alongside organisations such as Clore Leadership, the Association of Independent Museums and Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy. I'm a Mental Health First Aider and use my knowledge, experience and empathy to support others as they find ways to thrive in their professional and private lives.

I'm excited to be joining Cornwall Climate Care at a point when its message is needed more than ever.

I'll be working with the team to craft a pathway for the charity which considers its place in the Cornish environmental movement, its role in climate education and its strategy as a campaigning organisation.

Education forms an important part of CCC's work, with a programme which stretches across the whole county and connects with university research projects. The education programme is funded by donations and grants and one of my roles is to raise funding for this vital work stream as well as for other aspects of our work.

There will be a new film screening early in 2026 and I'm looking forward to meeting some of you at film screenings and finding out more about your thoughts on how CCC can respond better to the climate crisis. We are a small determined charity who genuinely care but to continue our work we do need further support from others who feel equally strongly about climate action.
